Two ways to play online

  • Quick match. Press Play someone online now and we'll find you an opponent in seconds: a classic 3×3 game, with a rematch whenever you both want one.
  • Play with a friend. Set up a private game and send the link — the steps are below.

How to play online with a friend

  • Set up the game. Pick the board — 3×3 up to 6×6 — Single game or Best of 3, and Fade mode if you like. Add a nickname, or leave it blank to be Player 1, then press Create game link.
  • Send the link by text, WhatsApp, email or anything else. Your friend opens it on their own phone or computer, picks a nickname and joins.
  • Play. Moves appear on both screens straight away. Send an emoji to celebrate — or to complain — and press Rematch when you're done. Sides swap every game, so you both get to go first.

Good to know

  • Keep the game open. It lives in the browser of whoever created it, so closing that tab ends it. Switching apps for a moment — to send the link, say — is fine: the game reconnects when you come back.
  • No accounts, no app, nothing to install. Moves travel straight between your two devices, or through an encrypted relay when a network blocks a direct link.
  • Hints and the Coach are off in online games, so it's a fair fight. Sharpen up first with How to win at tic tac toe.
  • Sitting next to each other? 2 player tic tac toe works on a single device.

Questions people ask

How do I play tic tac toe online with a friend?

Create a game on this page, send your friend the link, and they join from their own phone or computer. Moves show up instantly on both screens. There's nothing to install and no account to make.

Who will I play in Quick match?

Another player looking for a game at the same time — or, if nobody's available, a computer opponent. Everyone gets a random name, and games between strangers go through a secure relay, so nobody sees your IP address.

Is online tic tac toe free?

Yes. It's completely free, with no ads, accounts or downloads.

Why did our game end?

An online game lives in the browser of the player who created it, so it ends when that tab is closed. Switching apps for a moment is fine: the game reconnects when you come back.

What if we can't connect?

Games connect your two devices directly, or through an encrypted relay when a network blocks that. If it still fails, try switching one of you to Wi-Fi or a different network, then open the link again.
