TicTacToe.net is a free place to play tic tac toe in your browser — against a friend on the same device, or against a bot that ranges from friendly to flawless. No sign-up, no download.
What you can play
- Four board sizes. Classic 3×3 (three in a row), plus 4×4, 5×5 and 6×6 where you need four in a row.
- Three bot levels. Easy makes plenty of mistakes, Medium spots the obvious, and Hard looks as far ahead as it can.
- Single games or Best of 3. In a match, sides swap every round so both players get to move first.
Fade mode
Each player can only keep a few marks on the board. Place one more and your oldest mark fades away — the one that's about to go is shown ghosted so you can plan around it. It turns tic tac toe's famous stalemates into a fast, tactical game where the board never fills up.
The Coach
Chess players have engines that grade every move; now tic tac toe does too. With the Coach on, each move you make is marked Best, Good, Inaccuracy, Mistake or Blunder, you get an accuracy score at the end of the game, and the Hint button colours every empty square by how good it is. You can step back through any game move by move to see where it turned.
A bot that can't lose
On 3×3, the Hard bot searches every possible continuation of the game, so it plays perfectly — the best anyone can do against it is a draw. That claim is checked by an automated test that plays out every possible game against it. On bigger boards there are far too many games to search them all, so Hard thinks ahead for about a second per move in a background thread, which keeps the page smooth.
Play your way
The board works with a mouse, a touchscreen or a keyboard (arrow keys to move, Enter to play, Ctrl/⌘+Z to undo). There's a light “ink on paper” theme and a dark “chalkboard” theme, and your settings and scores are remembered on your device.
